ADULTS 18+ · NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING

Adult Autism Assessment

You may have wondered for years why some experiences feel different for you, or you may be considering autism for the first time. An autism evaluation begins with a thorough clinical interview and careful exploration of your developmental history, including social communication, relationships, sensory experiences, behavior, and patterns of thinking from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

We’ll look at how these patterns have affected your relationships, work or school, daily life, and overall functioning. When appropriate, standardized questionnaires and other assessment measures may be used to provide additional information. I consider these findings alongside your developmental history and current experiences to determine whether autism may help explain your experiences, consider other conditions with overlapping features, and understand how any existing diagnoses may be affecting your functioning. The evaluation can also provide practical recommendations tailored to your individual strengths and needs.

THREE APPOINTMENTS

A clear assessment process.

01 /

Intake session

I gather developmental and early-childhood history, discuss your current experiences, and clarify what you hope to learn.

02 /

Testing session

I use standardized measures, interviews, communication-based tasks, and selected paper-and-pencil or computerized testing to build a comprehensive picture.

03 /

Feedback session

I explain your diagnostic profile, discuss strengths and support needs, and review recommendations and next steps. You generally receive a copy of your completed report.

Your self-awareness matters

Suspecting a diagnosis is a valid reason to seek an evaluation. I use a neurodiversity-affirming approach that respects different processing styles while considering the full picture, including explanations you may not have expected.

Looking beyond a single diagnosis

An autism evaluation includes screening for related or co-occurring concerns, such as ADHD, anxiety, OCD, depression, mood concerns, and executive functioning. These screenings help inform the diagnostic picture and recommendations; additional assessment may be appropriate.
